How Do I Customize the List Invitation Message?

As of May 2007, we have changed Sympa's default configuration to require all subscribers to confirm their intent to subscribe before being added to a list.  This applies both to user-initiated subscription requests (e.g. from your website) and to subscribers being added by list owners.

This policy protects subscribers from being subscribed to lists against their will, and protects list owners and ONE/Northwest from being flagged as spammers.

When a list owner attempts to add subscribers through the Sympa web interface, the subscriber will receive an invitation message, to which they must respond before being added to the list.

To customize the list invitation message:

  1. Log into Sympa at http://lists.onenw.org.  Only list owners can change the invitation message for a list.
  2. Navigate to your list homepage
  3. In the left-hand menu, click Admin > Customizing
  4. Choose "subscribing invitation message" from the drop-down menu, then click the "Edit" button
  5. Customize the message as you see fit.

You need to retain the headers of the message.  You may edit the text of the subject line, but you need to keep the tag "[ %subject% ] intact.  You may edit the body text of the message as you see fit.

The original version of the invite message, should you need to revert back to it, is:

From: [% requested_by %]
Reply-To: [% conf.sympa %]
Subject: You've been invited to join [% list.name %]. [% subject %]
Mime-version: 1.0
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1
Content-transfer-encoding: 8bit

You have been invited to join the list: [% list.name %]

The topic of this list is:

[% list.subject %]

To subscribe, please reply to this message, making sure to keep the subject line intact.

If you do not wish to subscribe to this list, just ignore this message.
