Email Newsletters

Since 2002, ONE/Northwest has been researching and testing a number of email newsletter publishing tools (for more information, please see our review of email newsletter tools). By 2007, growing demand for integration with the Salesforce database system led to the adoption of a service provider known as Vertical Response. Vertical Response is a top-of-the-line email publishing systems that allows groups to publish extremely sophisticated email newsletters and other broadcast emails. ONE/Northwest is offering our expertise in this system to Northwest environmental groups including newsletter design help, training and support.

Vertical Response Features

  • Integration with Salesforce CRM which enables you to manage your subscriber database seamlessly. Create reports, templates, send emails to campaigns and track everything through your Salesforce application.
  • Click-through tracking and email open rates allow you to determine who is actually reading your emails and what specific articles/links they find compelling.
  • Automatic bounce management identifies and removes subscribers whose email addresses are no longer valid.
  • Easy unsubscribe for people who request to be removed from your lists. Vertical Response tracks unsubscribes so you don't accidentally resubscribe people, or send email to them after they have opted out.
  • "Forward to a friend" allows recipients of your newsletter the ability to forward a copy to a friend and allows you to track who's forwarding your email newsletter.
  • Email format sniffing that automatically determines which of your recipients can receive HTML email.
  • List segmentation allows you to send to a subset your list based upon specific criteria (e.g. state, zip code).
  • Customizable fields to allow groups to send highly personalized messages, and track just about any custom data (e.g. legislative district, area of interest)
  • Customizable subscription forms. Subscriber info can be exported to your database and imported from it.
  • Branding with your domain. The entire newsletter can be branded with your organization's domain name (e.g. newsletters.yourdomain.org).

Pricing and Getting Started

Setup

Getting started with our newsletter services requires a number of actions including template design, designing email capture forms for your website, uploading of your lists and training for your staff. ONE/Northwest only charges groups for actual time spent but we estimate the first time setup costs to be in the range of $900 to $1200 depending upon a number of factors. If you're already skilled with HTML editing, then the cost may be lower. For a more detailed price quote you should contact a ONE/Northwest staff member at consulting@onenw.org.

Ongoing Costs

Vertical Response is priced based on the number of email sends you wish to do. There is no monthly cost - you simply purchase email "credits" (one credit equals one sent email) when you want to do a send. Vertical response offers non-profit pricing and credits get cheaper the more you buy.

In addition, Vertical Response will grant 10,000 free email sends per month to 501(c)(3) organizations. Fill out and send in their application form to see if your organization qualifies.

Alternatives

Vertical Response is a high-end solution that has many useful features and is slightly more expensive than some of the other options. ONE/Northwest supports several other email newsletter solutions, and has reviewed quite a few competitors. For in-depth information on all of these tools, and advice on choosing the tool that best fits your needs, please see our review of email newsletter tools.

What if I'm not a Northwest environmental group?

If you're interested in state-of-the art email publishing, and you're not a Northwest environmental group, you can contact Vertical Response directly (http://www.verticalresponse.com). If you're a smaller organization, then we suggest you contact Brandinthebox.com (http://www.brandinthebox.com), a Seattle-based social marketing firm that provides email solutions to a wide variety of for-profit and non-profit clients.
