Gideon Rosenblatt

Executive DirectorGideon Rosenblatt
Since joining the organization in early 2001, Gideon has led ONE/Northwest toward an increased focus on communication and citizen engagement services and on programs aimed at strengthening cross-organizational ties within the environmental movement. His Movement as Network paper serves as the framework for much of this latter work.

Before joining ONE/Northwest, Gideon held a variety of senior management positions in marketing and product development over ten years at Microsoft. While there he pioneered some of the company’s earliest work on the Internet and founded CarPoint, one of Microsoft's most successful consumer businesses. He received his MBA in marketing from the Wharton School in 1991 after several years doing business consulting in China.

David Averill

Director of Consulting Servicesdavid.jpg
Like muscled salmon, Dave watches over schools of technology projects drifting gracefully upstream to their home waters. (Sorry, I paid a lot for that English Major, so I have to try.) Since 2002, David has been managing our fee-for-service consultancy. He works closely with outreach staff, technical staff and consultants with an eye toward sustainability, quality and fun. Dave has a career peppered with a variety of do-gooder work. He was a national program manager for Community Voice Mail , case manager at Northwest AIDS Foundation(Lifelong AIDS Alliance) and worked as an organizer for Montana Human Rights Network.

Dave lives in Seattle with his wife (Kelly) and three children (Owen, Mairead and Keegan). When not saving the world one technology project at a time, Dave plays with his kids, and looks forward to his next cup of Fair Trade Coffee.

Jon Baldivieso

Web Developerjonb.jpg
Jon tries to save the websites of the environmental community from the 1990s -- he makes websites behave the way they should and look their best using the open source content management system Plone. He is an active member of Portland's Plone User Group.

After graduating from Williams College (hot on the heels of Jon Stahl), he spent two years putting databases online for the Environmental Working Group. When the East Coast humidity became wholly unbearable (he grew up in Pennsylvania), he packed up the wagon and hit the Oregon Trail. After spending a year learning the moves by consulting for ONE/Northwest, Jon officially joined the Portland office in 2004.

During precious moments not behind a computer screen, Jon can be found with his wife and daughter doing some combination of climbing, skiing, eating, and hiking.

Drew Bernard

Strategist
drewDrew's great grandchildren will live in a time of human harmony with nature. Their parents will make day-to-day choices using knowledge of natural laws their great grandparents' generation wasted time bickering about. Their grandmother and grandfather, like the generations before them, will make decisions that will shape the world for generations to come. At the moment however, they (Drew's daughter and son) are mostly focused on learning to hop like frogs, draw cats and dogs, and use the big boy potty.

Drew founded and continues to manage the Portland office of ONE/Northwest.  In addition to helping us more effectively serve groups in Oregon and southwest Washington, his leadership has helped us to transform our consulting practices and tools around strategy consulting, messaging/framing, and to complete some of our first significant coalition projects, such as the Clear Voices bill tracking solution.  He writes about stuff he's seeing and thinking about that relate to online strategy on his blog and Twitter.

During the previous decade, Drew was involved in a variety of entrepreneurial endeavors, including co-founding a furniture company in Seattle, product managing a multi-node fail-over clustering solution for Windows NT, and helping develop a software product for small businesses. Drew graduated from the University of Washington where he studied marketing. He and his wife Sara are also Partners in Social Venture Partners – Portland. Staff member since 2002.

Kelley Bevans

Project Manager

Kelly BevansKelley comes to ONE/Northwest after working more than seven years in the decision analysis software industry, focusing on web integration and IT project management. Previously in pursuit of a PhD in political science, she atoned for not finishing her dissertation at New York University by working as a volunteer for the Washington State Howard Dean campaign and now continues her progressive political activism in her community, in Washington State and online on a variety of local blogs.

Kelley is looking forward to flexing her Manhattan-honed bicycling skills in downtown Seattle.

Josh Boese

Project Assistant

JoshThe Mennonite Volunteer factory has produced another recruit for ONE/Northwest in the form of Josh Boese. Josh is volunteering his time in the big city after coming from the rural farm lands of Kansas. Josh graduated from Hesston College with an Associates of Science degree in 2008. He will be working on the web design team as a project associate. Outside of work, Josh likes to watch, play, or try to play just about any sport with his all time favorite being football. Josh also likes to spend time in the great outdoors.

Tiffany Devoy

Director of Development

Tiffany DevoyTiffany hails from cold, cold Minneapolis, where she stayed long enough to graduate from the University of Minnesota before heading west in search of warmer climes. She has since spent over 10 years fundraising in and for the Seattle nonprofit community, including King County Sexual Assault Resource Center, Hanford nuclear watchdogs Heart of America Northwest, and The Community Abortion Information Resource Project.

Tiffany's strong commitment to social and environmental justice brought her to ONE/Northwest in early 2006. Her free time is spent reading obscure gothic novels and planning her dream vacation.

Sara Freedman

Staff Writer

Sara.jpegSara was raised in the high desert of Oregon. She was the arts and culture editor for The Source Weekly in Bend, Oregon, and continues to freelance as an editor for Sasquatch Books in Seattle. Her work has appeared in numerous Northwest publications.  Sara holds a master's degree in writing from Portland State University. In her previous life, she was a program manager for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Puget Sound and the program director for summer camping with the CYO.  She has a Washington State teaching certificate and has taught both social studies and environmental education.  She loves mid-'90s Northwest indie rock, the smell of sagebrush and juniper, and anything having to do with the Puget Sound.

David Glick

Web Developer

David GlickDavid joined ONE/Northwest as a Mennonite volunteer and stuck around because he couldn't bear the thought of returning to Midwestern winters.  David divides his time between implementing websites in Plone, keeping the servers running, and developing the engagement platform.

Before coming to ONE/Northwest, David worked on content management software at Mennonite.net and digital signage management software at RedPost, while finishing off his physics degree at Goshen College (after dabbling in history for a couple years).  However, his programming experience extends back to the creation of Cowtris in ninth grade and playing with Visual Basic at age 8.  When not sitting at his computer, you might find David practicing the hammered dulcimer, hiking, biking, or studying languages.

Joey Gray

CRM Consultant

Staff-JG

Born in Olympia, Joey's environmental values were instilled early as a Department of Ecology litter critter. She sent her first activist letter to a candy company urging them to change their new plastic wrappers back to paper so they wouldn't last forever on the ground. The response? Alas, free coupons she promptly used.

Joey honed her community organizing skills as co-founder of DiscNW, the Potlatch ultimate tournament, national and international mixed-gender ultimate celebrations & championships, Friends of Athletic Fields board member, and Executive Director of the Ultimate Players Association, earning degrees in International Studies, German, and Library & Information Science along the way. Her fascination with organizational rule systems has been informed by bureaucratic adventures living in SwitzerlandGermany, and Canada.

After organizing, playing and coaching around the world, Joey joined ONE/Northwest in 2007 to act as a bridge between program management and its growing Constituent Relationship Management (CRM, aka database) consulting program. She draws on diverse experience including information systems consultant, university student services, Congressional intern and REI bicycle department staff. Joey recognizes the Coast Salish people and her grandmother's ancestors in the Okanagan and Manitoba. And she loves to play with paradox, seeking balance in extremely moderate ways.

Shawn Kemp

Strategist

Shawn KempAfter many years in the high tech corporate jungle of Microsoft, leading innovation in online experiences for such well know products as Windows, Xbox, and Microsoft.com Shawn is thrilled to return to his passion of making the world a better place.

After setting a world record for crossing the American continent in a Solar Car he helped design and build, Shawn went on to pursue a career in Industrial Design. This quickly morphed into defining meaningful experiences and engagements with customers using the emerging World Wide Web.  Over the years Shawn has helped shape the thinking around the engagement paradigms for sites that have touched hundreds of millions of people around the world. He is now super excited to apply this expertise to an area were the goal is not to sell products but rather to affect change that ultimately makes our planet a better place.

After fleeing the hustle and bustle of Seattle in 2006, Shawn his wife (Misty) and dog (Jax) now call Bellingham home. They spend time exploring the natural beauty of the area, enjoying life, and helping to build a strong local community.

Sam Knox

Support Manager

sams-bio.jpg

Sam began his career at ONE/Northwest as a volunteer in December 2005, then became a work-study student and finally a regular staff member in 2008. He has extensively documented many of the online tools used by ONE/Northwest and their clients, in particular, Plone. He is now focused on delivering training to clients and supporting program staff on project work.

Sam holds a Bachelor's degree from the University of Washington's Program on the Environment, a forerunner of the modern College of the Environment. He also holds a Certificate in Restoration Ecology.

Sam enjoys his new home in West Seattle with his wife Amber, and three cats.

Dave Manelski

CRM Consultant

Dave ManelskiJoining the ONE/Northwest team in the Spring of 2008, Dave brings his experience in nonprofit communications, outreach, & fundraising to the fore.  A self-proclaimed technology experimenter, he honed his skills at his previous employer -- Earth Share of Washington -- designing & developing their website, managing an overhaul of their database, and connecting with an inspiring community of Washington conservation leaders.

Dave was elected to the board of the Bicycle Alliance of Washington in February 2008.  As an everyday bicycle commuter, he is passionate about promoting cycling as the ultimate form of transportation and recreation.

Dave and his wife, Suzanne, welcomed their first child (Alex) in March 2008.  Prior to becoming a parent, Dave enjoyed numerous outdoor pursuits.  He now spends his time away from work changing diapers, catching up on sleep, and testing baby carriers... although he looks forward to getting outside again soon.

Christine O'Connor

Operations Director

ChristineChristine is joining ONE/Northwest after taking a break from the paid workforce to raise two daughters. A veteran of twenty years in technology management roles at large corporations, she is looking forward to making a contribution to the mission of ONE/Northwest.

She hopes that she will be able to bring a distilled version of what she’s learned, having had the chance to mull over her varied experiences in the “Dilbert Zone” while working on a masters degree in ministry at Seattle University. Her commitment to the environment started in earnest with the diaper decision some 18 years ago and recently inspired a  “green” remodel of her home in Montlake. She has way too many books in her house, likes to study Seattle’s history, and is working on a book tentatively titled “What I’ve Learned So Far.”

Sean Pender

Information Systems Managersean.jpg
Sean doesn't know karate, he can't explain the popularity of knitting and he doesn't know how Doritos are made. In fact, the list of things Sean doesn't know is virtually endless.  What he does know is that at ONE/Northwest he is responsible for day to day management of the office; it's safe to consider him the HR, Accounts Payable, and Accounts Receivable departments at ONE/Northwest. Additionally, he provides some help with our email list hosting services, with fundraising and with the intersection of our programs and our bookkeeping practices. Sean has been at ONE/Northwest since 2001. He has a degree in Political Science from Western Washington University with an emphasis on Public Policy and Administration and previously worked at the Washington Environmental Council and doing fundraising for a gubernatorial candidate who has since gone on to bigger and better things

Sean and his wife Lori have one daughter: Corinne, who told Sean that he talks about monkeys too often. Sean likes to exercise (biking, running or hiking) so that he justify eating constantly. And drinking beer every night with dinner.

Matthew Scholtz

CRM Consultant

Matthew ScholtzThe founding (and only) member of the Bellingham field office, Matthew is a long-time collaborator and friend who is now very happy to be part of the  ONE/Northwest tribe.   His diabolical plan: to get organizations set up with databases that fit their mission and methods, not the other way around.

Originally hailing from a state south of here that we won't mention (it's not Oregon), he went to school in New Mexico, and boldly claims the title of least tech-related college degree.  After a stint in the Arizona asphalt desert (sure does appreciate the rain and green around here), he has spent the last seven years as a rogue database consultant for hire (by non-profits only) in Washington and San Francisco.  He has also served as designer, programmer, and advisor to a few well-known open source database projects.

He is now walking the tricky but exhilarating tightrope of dividing his time between ONE/Northwest and his continuing independent practice, mostly in the North Puget Sound area.

He is immoderately happily married to Aubri, and plays the accordion.

Jon Stahl

Director of Web Solutions
Jon StahlJon roams the nonprofit technology landscape like a woolly mammoth.   The last of the founding cohort of ONE/Northwest staffers, Jon has been with the organization since 1996, shortly after Al Gore sent the first email message.

Over the past twelve years, he has worked with hundreds of Northwest conservation organizations on projects that range from strategic communications planning to running ethernet cable through basements. Currently, he manages consulting projects, charts ONE/Northwest's technology innovation agenda and thinks big thoughts

In October 2007, Jon was elected the board of the Plone Foundation, where he helps to nurture the community and codebase of the world's best open-source content management.  He has served on the board of Eco Encore and Washington Toxics Coalition, two fabulous local environmental groups.

Jon spends his spare time reading, taking photographs, telemark skiing, cooking tasty food, playing ultimate frisbee and strumming an acoustic guitar.  He is blissfully married to Molly, and likes to imagine he is not the geekiest member of his household.

Karen Uffelman

Director of Client Strategy

Karen UffelmanAlong with a disconcertingly extensive knowledge of country western song lyrics from the late 70's and early 80's, Karen brings significant expertise in membership engagement, coalition building, fundraising, and asking questions. She is an eternal optimist, loves the rain, and suffers from a serious cookbook addiction.  Karen’s first real job was managing a performing arts center called New City Theater. Other previous credits include Development Director for Corporate Accountability International, Associate Director of Washington Environmental Alliance for Voter Education (WEAVE), and Managing Director of Washington Conservation Voters.

When she's not at work, you can find her at Pratt in the printmaking studio, studying flamenco, practicing fiddle, baking pies, climbing mountains, digging in her garden, or riding her super-spiff Salsa Casseroll. Karen lives in South Seattle with her partner Scott, two cats, and way too many bicycles.

Veda Williams

Web Developer

Veda WilliamsA transplant from North Carolina in 2007, Veda is the Swiss Army Knife of web consultants. She helps coax web projects through from their genesis to their finished state. She possesses a wide swath of skills, ranging from skinning to project management, web design, documentation, training, and more. She previously worked for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on a large number of Plone websites, which gave her the chops she needs to do the job as an all-around Plone professional. She brings that knowledge plus more than 17 years of software development / design / project management to ONE/Northwest.

Although she misses the death-defying rush of caring for her beloved tigers in North Carolina, she tries to content herself with her four ornery housecats and getting acquainted with the dark underbelly of Seattle and giving back wherever she can.

Beloved Volunteers

We are fortunate to have some amazing long-term volunteers as part of the ONE/Northwest team.  Working side-by-side with our staff, they turbocharge our work with their energy, passion and skill.

John Fine

John has been trying to build cool software for at least 100 years, starting in the 1970’s on a DEC PDP-8 while growing up in mid-town Manhattan.  After watching countless episodes of Grizzly Adams, he emigrated to the great NW, learning how to think at  Reed College  and how to climb rocks at the Index Town Walls.  Having never actually studied computer science, he was able to obtain his first job as programmer writing C and Intel 8080 Assembler code on pre-IBM PC machines, back when a bit still counted for something.  Eventually he found himself involved in the creation the programming language Visual BASIC at Microsoft.

For the last 50 years or so, John has favored righting wrongs through organized data while a partner at  Social Venture Partners.  When he saw the chance to grab an oar and pull with the crack CRM team at ONE/Northwest, he jumped at it.  For color, he still enjoys climbing and windsurfing the Gorge.  Plus raising his children and doting on his wife, natch.

David Habib

David joins ONE/Northwest after 9 years of working on his own, trying to save the world, one nonprofit database and web project at a time.  He's excited to work once again with smart motivated people, and to continue to serve the non profit community.  He continues to be an active partner in Social Venture Partners, where he has worked with non profits in human services, early learning, education, and the environment.

Previous to his 9 years consulting, David was a senior software design engineer and development manager at Microsoft Corporation, where he has worked on Windows, applications, and development tools.  He was a technical development lead on the first two versions of the Microsoft Access database management system, and also was a development lead and development manager in Visual Studio, working on graphic design tools for web and database development.  David has a B.S. in Computer Science from the University of Washington.
