Movement as Network

ONE/Northwest’s work with hundreds of organizations each year gives us a unique perspective on the regional environmental community. We see the excellent work being done within individual organizations, as well as the fragmentation, redundancies and misalignment of strategies of the movement as a whole. This fragmentation produces a cacophony of voices that make it hard for the public to understand.

We are now involved in a number of exciting new projects that show tremendous promise in raising the collective effectiveness of this movement. New coalitions and other forms of inter-organizational collaboration are emerging and ONE/Northwest is working hard behind the scenes to help catalyze and accelerate these promising signs of a more networked and interconnected environmental movement.

ONE/Northwest also plays an important role as thought leader in networking the environmental movement. In 2004, Gideon Rosenblatt, ONE/Northwest's Executive Director published an influential paper called “Movement as Network” that explored possible paths for restructuring the environmental movement to achieve greater integration and overall effectiveness. This paper is being used by several leading organizations in our region as a guidepost in their organizational development and serves as the framework for ONE/Northwest’s work with collaborative efforts in our region.
