History

ONE/Northwest was founded in 1995 by two of the region’s leading environmental foundations, The Bullitt Foundation and The Brainerd Foundation. We were established as a not-for-profit provider of technology services to environmental groups in Alaska, British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, Montana and Idaho.

We concentrate our services on environmental organizations that work on a regional, state or local scale. These organizations fill a vital niche, affecting hundreds of issues in hundreds of places in ways that large national environmental organizations simply cannot. Our clients span the gamut from protecting ancient forests and wild salmon runs, to ensuring clean air and water and efficient energy and transportation systems, and a host of other issues impacting the quality of life across hundreds of communities in this region.

ONE/Northwest has earned an international reputation for leadership, innovation and impact in the field of nonprofit technology assistance. We play a critical, behind-the-scenes role in advancing environmental organizations’ communication capacity. Our first several years focused on traveling to far-flung locations, installing computers, software applications, networks and Internet connections and training staff on how to use these new tools. When we started over ten years ago, these organizations completely lacked even the most rudimentary computing infrastructure. Since that time we have helped over 800 environmental organizations in this region and “wired” a next-generation communications infrastructure that now links a huge portion of its environmental movement.

Nearing our 12th anniversary, ONE/Northwest is now building on these earlier investments to roll out a new generation of services aimed at helping these organizations work more effectively with one another in the ways they communicate, build relationships and engage people in protecting this region.
